Learn to Sing Carnatic Vocal - Tuning & Sitting Postures - Basic Carnatic Music Lessons - S.Sowmya

LYRICS

Carnatic music has a very ancient and traditional background. The very word “Carnatic” means traditional or ancient. However, the application of the term Carnatic to this form of music is more recent than the music itself! Here we discuss the elements of change and continuity in this traditional form of classical music in India. Carnatic music is a melody-based system. Melody in the context of Carnatic music may be explained as, “The production of any musical tone or succession of such tones or semitones, with definite frequencies, within certain parameters, whether rendered independently or in conjunction with rhythm and / or Iyrics”. Rhythm can be defined as a process in which the nuclei of attention are separated by individual parts of time. In Carnatic music, the other important and unique feature is the prosody (Iyrics), Known as Sahitya. The Sahitya has always been the effective means to communicate man’s moods. Some of the key term you will come across when dealing with Carnatic music are: Raga, Tala, Kriti, Varnam, Padam, Javali, Tillana, Alapana, Tanam, Neraval, Kalpanaswara and Tani Avartanam. Nadham || Thyagaraja || S Sowmya (Juke Box)

LYRICS

Smt.S.Sowmya's Thyagaraja krithis in Nadham, Composition of Thyagaraja. Tyagaraja tyāgarāja 4 May 1767 – 6 January 1847), also known as Tyāgayya, was a renowned composer of Carnatic music, a form of Indian classical music. He was prolific and highly influential in the development of India's classical music tradition. Tyagaraja and his contemporaries, Shyama Shastri and Muthuswami Dikshitar, were regarded as the Trinity of Carnatic music. Tyagaraja composed thousands of devotional compositions, most in Telugu and in praise of Lord Rama, many of which remain popular today.[3] Of special mention are five of his compositions called the Pancharatna Kritis (English: "five gems"), which are often sung in programs in his honour. Tyāgarāja began his musical training at an early age under Sonti Venkata Ramanayya, a music scholar, after the latter heard his singing and was impressed by the child prodigy. Tyagaraja regarded music as a way to experience God's love. His compositions focused on expression, rather than on the technicalities of classical music. He also showed a flair for composing music and, in his teens, composed his first song, "Namo Namo Raghavayya", in the Desika Todi ragam and inscribed it on the walls of the house. His compositions are mainly of a devotional (bhakti) or philosophical nature. His songs feature himself usually either in an appeal to his deity of worship (primarily the Avatar Rama), in musings, in narratives, or giving a message to the public. Tyagaraja, who was immersed in his devotion to Rama and led a spartan way of life, did not take any steps to systematically codify his vast musical output. Rangaramanuja Iyengar, a leading researcher on Carnatic music, in his work Kriti Manimalai, has described the situation prevailing at the time of the death of Tyagaraja. It is said that a major portion of his incomparable musical work was lost to the world due to natural and man-made calamities. Usually, Tyagaraja used to sing his compositions sitting before deity manifestations of Lord Rama, and his disciples noted down the details of his compositions on palm leaves. After his death, these were in the hands of his disciples, then families descending from the disciples. A Carnatic musician by profession, Sowmya’s life has been soaked in melody from the very beginning. Growing up in a traditional South Indian family, she had her initial tutelage in music from her father Dr. Srinivasan, a Chemical Engineer with an enduring passion for Carnatic Music. Later she was singularly fortunate to be taken under the wings of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr. S. Ramanathan - exemplary musician, esteemed musicologist and extraordinary human being. She received further training from Smt. T. Muktha, of the legendary Brinda-Muktha duo. She attributes her success and achievements till today to these individuals and to the bountiful blessings of her beloved Ambal, the Goddess Kamakshi of Kanchipuram. The desire to propagate the traditions of South Indian music worldwide led her to establishCarnatica, an institution dedicated to music & dance instruction, archival, talent search and other related activities. In addition to being an accomplished musician, Sowmya also has excellent academic credentials. She is a double postgraduate (Master’s in Chemistry as well as Indian Music) and was a top-ranked scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) and the University of Madras. Currently pursuing doctoral research under the guidance of Dr. Premeela Gurumurthy at the University of Madras, Sowmya is a widely traveled, popular vocalist who strives to adhere to the strict classical values imbibed from her gurus Dr. Ramanathan and Smt. S.Sowmya || Gems Of Diksthar

LYRICS

Smt.S.Somwy's Muthuswami Diksthar Krithis. Muthuswami Dikshitar (24 March 1775 – 21 October 1835) was a South Indian poet, singer and Veena player, and a legendary composer of Indian classical music, who is considered one of the musical trinity of Carnatic music. His compositions, of which around 500 are commonly known, are noted for their elaborate and poetic descriptions of Hindu gods and temples and for capturing the essence of the raga forms through the vainika (veena) style that emphasises gamakas. They are typically in a slower speed (chowka kala). He is also known by his signature name of Guruguha which is also his mudra (and can be found in each of his songs). His compositions are widely sung and played in classical concerts of Carnatic music. According to legend, Murugan, the deity of the temple at Tirutani, placed a piece of sugar candy in Dikshitar's mouth and commanded him to sing. This marked the beginning of his career in music and also led to him adopting the mudra, Guruguha, one of the many names of Murugan.[5] His first composition was Śrināthādi guruguho jayati jayati in the raga Maya Malavagaula and Adi tala. This song addressed the Lord (and/or the guru) in the first declension(Vibhakthi) in Sanskrit. Dikshitar later composed kritis in all the eight declensions on the Lord. These are mostly with epithets glorifying Muruga in the ascetic/preceptor form and have very few references to specifically the deity in the saguna form, as at Thiruthani. LYRICS

Carnatic Music is one of world's oldest and richest musical traditions. It primarily comprises a monophonic song based on improvised variations. The melody infused ragas called alapana are introduced and developed gradually. It begins with Varnam a warm up of sort for the musicians followed by exchange of ragas and thalas intermixed with kritis and pallavi. The main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music; most compositions are written to be sung, and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in gāyaki (singing) style. Muddugare Yesoda - S.Sowmya - Annamacharya Carnatic Classical | Sri Krishna Jayanthi - Kannan Padal

LYRICS

Muddugare Yesoda - S.Sowmya - Annamacharya Carnatic Classical | Sri Krishna Jayanthi - Kannan Padal Presenting Annamacharya Carnatic Devotional Song on Lord Shri Krishna “Muddugare Yesoda” from the album - S.Sowmya - Classical Vocal sung by S.Sowmya in Kurinji Ragam and Ekaam Thalam Krishna Janmashtami Bhajans, a select compilation of Tamil Devotional Songs celebrates the birthday of lord Shree Krishna Govind. Gokulashtami Tamil Devotional Songs is going to enhance the essence of the Krishna Janmashtami festival. Most of the time, Krishna Janmashtami is listed on two consecutive days. The first one is for Smarta Sampradaya and other one is for Vaishanava Sampradaya. Vaishanava Sampradaya date is the latter one. A single date for Janmashtami means that both Sampradaya would observe Janmashtami on the same date. Gokulashtami or Janmashtami is celebrated in countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Fiji, USA, Caribbean Islands, etc. For Nepal, one can imagine the obvious reasons as it has announced themselves a Hindu country. But for rest parts of the world, a lot of credit goes to International Society for Krishna Consciousness, popularly known as ISKCON. Carnatic Vocal - Needhan Mechi Kolla - Sri Krishna Gaanam - S. Sowmya

S. Sowmya is a Carnatic music singer. She learnt music initially from her father Dr. Srinivasan, and later from Dr. S. Ramanathan and Smt.T. Muktha. In 1998, Sowmya co-founded Carnatica - an institution dedicated to classical music & dance instruction, archival, talent search and other related activities. She also co-authored the first comprehensive reference CD-ROM on Carnatic music, Nadanubhava. She is also a visiting professor at the Advanced School of Carnatic Music of the Music Academy Madras.

LYRICS

Carnatic music is a system of music commonly associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent, with its area roughly confined to four modern states of India: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. It is one of two main sub genres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancient Hindu traditions; the other sub genre being Hindustani music, which emerged as a distinct form because of Persian and Islamic influences in North India.
