Maihar band - Ustad Allauddin Khan's finest classical Indian music creation

LYRICS

The xylophone is made out of gun barrels - the real sound of India with the most sophisticated classical band developed by Ustad Allauddin Khan of Madhya Pradesh. The Maihar Band is an instrumental musical group in the Indian city of Maihar that performs both Indian and western music. After an epidemic orphaned many children, Ustad Allauddin Khan, a musician of the Maihar court who was moved by the tragedy, taught them how to play music and formed an orchestral group later known as the Maihar Band. The ruling prince, Braj Nath Singh, cooperated and helped Allauddin Khan in procuring and preparing required instruments. Baobab (as the musician was lovingly referred to) tested each student and trained them to play a particular instrument. He used jal tarang initially, but replaced it with Nal-tarang. Apart from the usual instruments like the tabla, dholak, harmonium and sitar, he used some special creations—the saranga and sitar-banjo. He trained some of the children to play western instruments including the piano, violin and cello with equal ease. In the royal palace, arrangements were made for the band and they played for visiting dignitaries from the gallery above the main hall. The band is associated with Department of Culture in Madhya Pradesh and the artists are government employees. They perform at occasions in Maihar and sometimes in other cities. Their participation in Lata Mangeshar Award Ceremony at Indore in 2005 brought them acclaim and the state government gave them a prominent place in its jubilee celebrations. A traditional Senia Maihar Gharana Drut Teentaal composition in Raga Pilu

LYRICS

I received Taalim for this Raga and Bundish from my Guru Late Ustad Dhyanesh Khan Sahab sometime in the 80s. Dhyanesh Da was ever so tolerant and caring towards me that he spared the stick often while in the process of receiving Taalim I used to commit silly mistakes. But he laid a lot of stress while imparting his rich Tantrakaari style of rendition to perfection. How I wish I could assimilate all the profundity that he bestowed on me.... How miss him every moment even to this day. Tabla Accompanyment by Shri Soumen Nandi PC Dr, Tanvir Reza

Annapurna Devi rare performance Raag Kaushiki

LYRICS

Annapurna Devi (Devanāgarī:अन्नपूर्णा देवी) (born Roshanara Khan, Maihar, India, 1926) is a reclusive Surbahar (bass Sitar) maestro of Indian Classical Music. Annapurna Devi represents a family of great tradition of Indian classical music. Her father and guru Ustad Alauddin Khan, founder of the "Senia Maihar Gharana" or "Senia Maihar School" of Indian classical music, was considered a singular phenomenon in the twentieth century Indian classical music. Her uncles Fakir Aftabuddin Khan and Ustad Ayet Ali Khan were revered musicians at their native place Shibpur in Bangladesh. Her brother Ustad Ali Akbar Khan is considered by many as one of the greatest living Sarode maestros. her former husband Sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar is perhaps the most well-known Indian classical musician abroad. Annapurna Devi was born in 1926 at Maihar, a small princely state of British India, (now a part of Madhya Pradesh state of India), where her revered father Ustad Alauddin Khan was a royal court musician at that time. But, her family has their ancestry in the village of Shibpur in the then British India, present Bangladesh. Annapurna Devi grew up in Maihar as Roshanara Khan. She was one of the daughters (Jahanara, Sharija, Roshanara) of Ustad Alauddin Khan. Sharija died an early death suffering from diseases in her childhood. When Alauddin's other daughter, Jahanara, got married, and a jealous mother-in-law burnt her Tanpura, Alauddin Khan decided not to train his other daughters. One day, however, he came home to discover Annapurna teaching her brother Ali Akbar Khan, and her talent made the emotional father change his mind. Annapurna, since then, started learning classical vocal music, Sitar, and Surbahar from her father. Annapurna Devi became a very accomplished Surbahar player of the Maihar Gharana (school) within a few years of starting to take music lessons from her father, and started guiding many of his father's disciples, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee and Ustad Bahadur Khan) in classical music as well as in the techniques and intricacies of Sitar playing. source: ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annapurna_De vi *** She lives to impart her father's teachings. She said, once, when asked the reason why she chose the life of a recluse: "My father, during my years of studentship, would repeatedly tell me that music should not be treated as a product for public display. It was a means of achieving one's own fulfillment which should lead to one's own development as a human being." Surbahar (Urdu: سربہار; Hindi: सुर बहार), sometimes known as bass sitar, is a plucked string instrument used in the Hindustani classical music of North India. It is closely related to sitar, but it has a lower tone. Depending on the instrument's size, it is usually pitched two to five whole steps below the standard sitar, but Indian classical music having no concept of absolute pitch, this may vary. The instrument can emit frequencies lower than 20 Hz. Surbahar is over 130 cm (51 inches). It uses a dried pumpkin as a resonator, and has a neck with very wide frets, which allow a glissando of six notes on the same fret through the method of pulling. The neck is made out of tun (Cedrela tuna), or teak wood. It has four rhythm strings (cikari), four playing strings (the broadest 1 mm), and 15 to 17 unplayed sympathetic strings. There are two bridges; the playable strings pass over the greater bridge, which is connected to the tabli with small legs, which are glued in place. The sympathetic strings pass over the smaller bridge which is directly glued on the tabli. The main bridge has a slightly bended upper surface which results in a droning sound, because the vibrating span of the strings quivers ever so slightly. The instrumentalist plays the strings using a metallic plectrum, the mizrab, which is fixed on the index finger of whose right hand. Three plectrums are used to play the dhrupad style of alap, jor, and jhala on surbahar. In the dhrupad style, instead of performing the sitarkhani and masitkhani gats, the instrumentalist plays the slow dhrupad composition in accompaniment with pakhawaj.

Pt. Nikhil Banerjee | Sitarist | Raag Bhairav | Maihar Gharana | Akashvani Sangeet

LYRICS

Prasar Bharati Central Archives series of Akashvani Sangeet - Pt. Nikhil Banerjee - Raag Bhairav This particular Sitar recital by Nikhil Banerjee in Raag Bhairav can certainly be regarded as among one of his most outstanding ones Derived from the scale of ‘Manva Thaat’ with additional deployment of the notes Suddha Madhyam and the Pancham, one finds a pleasing blending of a number of Ragas within its ambit. With the notes Teevra Madhyam. Suddha Dhaivetand Taar Shadaj in Aarohi, there appears the flavor of morning’s Raga Hindole while the phrase with the notes Pancham, Suddha Gandhar and Komal Rishabh in the Avarohi in the descending creates the aroma of the Raga Vibhas. The most remarkable features in this recital of his is the numerous perches over the note Komal Rishabh of the Taar Saptak that sound as if emanating from the innermost core of his heart. #AIRRaagam #AkashvaniSangeet #Classical #Sitarist #Artist #Musician Connect with Prasar Bharati Archives: Visit PB Archives WEBSITE: https://archives.prasarbharati.org/ Like PB Archives on FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/DDArchives/ Follow PB Archives on TWITTER: https://twitter.com/centralarchives Follow PB Archives on INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/pbarchives You can watch our Archival footage also at android platform on NewsOnAir PrasarBharati Official app AIR News+Live from the Google play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.parsarbharti.airnews&hl=en India's only 24x7 Indian Classical Music Channel, AIR Raagam is a treat for music lovers.

He maintains a calm, pleasing temperament throughout in this part in madhyalay. In the second composition set to Raag Piloo in a faster tempo, he soars with more varieties of taans and rhythmic intricacies. This gat is an age-old gem from the Maihar gharana which was handed down by Baba Alauddin Khan to Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar and Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. The trio had popularised this composition through decades of performances. Its ornamentations typify the nuances of a rebab – the Afghan predecessor of the sarod. Alam Khan gives a refined presentation, projecting deftly, all the elements of ‘tantrakari’ (instrumental nuances) that lend beauty to this composition. A sublime sawal-jawab between the sarod and tabla concludes this performance. Anubrata Chatterjee gives an energetic support, interpreting Khan’s phrases on his tabla, turning the happy finale into a grand celebration of rhythms and melody. As the name suggests, Mishra Piloo is a cocktail of various ragas with Raag Piloo as the mainstay. It is a melodic form that has influenced lighter compositions played towards the end of a Hindustani classical recital. ‘Mishra’ means a mixture and Raag Piloo is derived from its parent scale Kafi. Having its origins in the folk music of India, Kafi is a versatile scale that lends it’s characteristics to all ragas coming under its aegis. Piloo is one of its antecedents that has been chosen time and again by composers for both classical and the lighter songs and tunes.
