Beach Fossils' debut single, Daydream/Desert Sand, was released on Captured Tracks in February 2010; their self-titled album was released on the same label later that year and was met with critical acclaim. 2011's What a Pleasure EP showed the band continuing to experiment and refine their songwriting chops. The next Beach Fossils album Clash the Truth featured a more energetic sound reminiscent of the band’s live shows and was issued in early 2013 on Captured Tracks. After taking a break, during which the band appeared on the HBO show Vinyl as members of the early-'70s "punk" band "the Nasty Bits," the group began working on a new album. This time out, Payseur involved the other members of the band in the writing process, with bassist Jack Doyle Smith and guitarist Tommy Davidson contributing ideas. Somersault showcased a band in bloom. Charting into new musical territory with a refined songwriting style, Somersault is an album that captures flashes of life in New York grounded in personal experience. The record was made in various locales in New York City and Los Angeles, including engineer Jonathan Rado's home studio and a cabin in Upstate New York, featuring guest vocals from Slowdive's Rachel Goswell among others. Somersault was released in mid 2017 on Bayonet Records, a label Payseur started with his wife Kate Garcia. Le carnaval des animaux (The Carnival of the Animals) is a musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. Le carnaval was composed in February 1886 while Saint-Saëns was vacationing in a small Austrian village. Fossiles (Fossils) Strings, two pianos, clarinet, and xylophone: Here, Saint-Saëns mimics his own composition, the Danse macabre, which makes heavy use of the xylophone to evoke the image of skeletons playing card games, the bones clacking together to the beat. The musical themes from Danse macabre are also quoted; the xylophone and the violin play much of the melody, alternating with the piano and clarinet. The piano part is especially difficult here - octaves that jump in quick thirds. Allusions to "Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman" (better known in the English-speaking world as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star), the French nursery rhymes "Au clair de la lune", and "J'ai du bon tabac" (the piano plays the same melody upside down), the popular anthem Partant pour la Syrie, as well as the aria Una voce poco fa from Rossini's The Barber of Seville can also be heard. The musical joke in this movement is that the musical pieces quoted are the fossils of his time.

Although a few studies have been done in the wild, Pig Nosed Turtles in captivity have been known to show aggression. This might suggest they’re more territorial than many of their turtle peers. They’re the last surviving member of their family making them a living fossil. The term living fossil is a loosely defined term that’s generally associated with species that haven’t changed much at all, and at least closely resemble other species that we otherwise only know as fossils. Living Fossils are pretty important for a few reasons. Mostly, they provide a window into an ancient biological world that we’d otherwise only know through fossil records. Also despite the appearance of a lack of evolution, Living Fossils provide a tangible example of Stabilizing Selection, an important stage in the evolutionary process. These interesting turtles are found mainly in freshwater streams, rivers and lagoons in Northern Australia and In New Guinea as well. Because of their bizarre appearance, they’ve become popular among exotic pet traders. Even though laws in places such as Indonesia prohibit the trade of these turtles, authorities have confiscated some 10,000 turtles from smugglers back in 2010. Do us a big favor and hit that like button! 9 - The Purple Frog The Purple Frog has almost a cartoonish like appearance. Kinda like a Pokemon character or something! In 2003 when researchers discovered the species, they described it as looking like a bloated doughnut with stubby legs and a pointed snout. As unflattering a description as that is and as odd as they may be to look at, national Geographic dubbed their discovery an “Once in a Century” occurrence in 2003. It’s believed they’re the successors to an ancient frog lineage that evolved roughly 130 million years ago along with dinosaurs. Found in the Western Ghat Mountain range in India, these frogs were only distantly related to a group of frogs living in the The Seychelles in Africa. Other than that, they have no living relatives. But we do know that they’ve been around for at least 100 million years! 8 - Vampire Squid Vampire Squids are one of those creatures you have to see to believe. Aside from having a pretty cool name and a crazy appearance, they’re also biologically significant. Scientifically they’re known as Vampyroteuthis infernalis which translates to “Vampire squid from hell.” That’s a bit extreme if you ask me. They pretty much just float around eating these floating particles called “Marine Snow.” Not much is known about the behavior as they have trouble surviving in captivity, and an artificial environment makes their non-defensive behavior unreliable anyways. They’re hard to observe in their natural environment because of where they live. Given their low metabolic rate, vampire squids have to use some interesting tactics to conserve energy while avoiding their predators. They’ll eject a sticky cloud of bioluminescent mucus that are essentially orbs of blue light. This probably acts to daze predators and allows the vampire squid to disappear into the blackness without the need to swim far. Combine that with the writhing of glowing arms and erratic movements, vampire squids make it difficult for its predator to identify a single target. Now, as far as the living fossil business goes. The Vampire Squid can date its lineage back to ancient Octopi some 165 million years ago. Pretty impressive to live that long while being tired all the time right?
What's the most bizarre fossil you can think of? Is it the T-rex fossil? Maybe it's the Stegosaurus fossil. These imprints are some of the Earth's most useful prehistoric remnants, giving us a window to the daily life of creatures which lived millions of years ago. It has become a common sight to see popular fossils such as those of Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex in museums, but what is much less known are the many strange and bizarre fossils which paleontologists have discovered, especially recently. These fossils have been kept - whether by ash or amber or sand - in a state clear enough for us to study and learn from. Fossilization is a complicated and time-consuming process. It normally happens when sediments are compacted under intense pressure combined with the replacement of organic matter by silica and other materials in a process referred to as petrification. Since most tissue, including skin, organs, and muscle, decays before full fossilization can occur, we mostly find bones. Though there are plenty of bones on this list, we've also included a host of other bizarre fossils. (Did someone say fossilized sperm? Oh, we did.) You'll likely be shocked at some of the weird fossils on this list; ones that unfortunately don't get as much media attention as they should, such as a turtle the size of a helicopter. Read on to discover the 25 Most Bizarre Fossils Ever Discovered. 25 Most Bizarre Fossils Ever Discovered | List25 About 74 million years ago, a Velociraptor and Protoceratops were locked in a fierce duel in present-day Mongolia. The Velociraptor plunged its rear claws deep into the neck of the Protoceratops which responded by trying to rip the former's arm off. The two were likely covered by a collapsing sand dune, fossilized in fighting stances that paleontologists amazingly discovered while digging them up. Though researchers most often find bones of fossilized animals, diggers in Antarctica found something even weirder: sperm. Dating back 50 million years, the sperm is attributed to a collared worm and is the oldest animal sperm yet discovered. Though such organic matter would normally easily break down, the worm's reproductive methods of shooting the sperm and eggs into a protective cocoon helped preserve this bizarre fossil discovery for ages. Scientists have discovered a 500 million year-old eye in southern Australia. The delicately-preserved compound eye (like a fly's) has about 3,000 lenses, significantly better than the majority of its fellow creatures at the time. Paleontologists aren't sure which animal it belongs to, but it does show that very ancient creatures were indeed capable of having very powerful vision. The 1994 discovery of a fossilized oviraptor sitting on her eggs changed our understanding of dinosaurs forever. Previously, it was only speculated that some dinos sat on their eggs (like today's chickens do) to incubate them. This perfectly discovered fossil from Mongolia proved the assumption to be true. "Til death do us part" proved true for two ancient turtles. Found in an ancient volcanic lake in western Germany, these two turtles were doing the good deed as they sank deeper into the lake in coital bliss. Since it was a volcanic lake, the deeper waters were toxic to the turtles who quietly died, still locked together in the mating position, well-preserved by the highly toxic waters which did them in. Some people are scared of frogs just because they seem gross, but if we had existed 70 million years ago, we would have been afraid of them because they could eat dinosaurs. The largest frog ever discovered, Beelzebufo ampinga (AKA the frog from hell), could grow up to 16 inches (41 cm) long and weight up to 10 pounds (4.5 kg). It may seem unbelievable at first, but some of the most well-known African creatures likely roamed the English countryside a few thousand years ago. Legendary paleoecologist William Buckland identified the bones of a fossilized rhino and the preserved feces of then-local hyenas from 125,000 years back. The fossils of Dimetrodon reveal one of the most intriguing dinosaurs found to date. Found largely throughout the Red Beds of Texas, Dimetrodon is notable for the large fin on its back, speculated to have helped in temperature control while potentially giving the prehistoric beast an edge in hunting. The DITSONG: National Museum of Natural History formerly known as the Transvaal Museum was founded as the Staatsmuseum of the ZAR on the 1st of December 1892.And it has, since then acted as custodian and documentation centre of South Africa’s natural heritage. The Museum’s collections and exhibits include hominid fossils from the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and associated fauna, including Mrs Ples [the nickname attributed to a fossil skull believed to represent a distant relative of all humankind]; fossils, skeletons, skins and mounted specimens of amphibians, fish, invertebrates, reptiles and mammals. On these collections are based the Museum’s educational programmes, research is done and information is communicated to all people of South Africa as well as to the international community. The Ditsong National Museum of Natural History is the only natural history museum in Gauteng and one of the largest in South Africa. It is unique in that it is the only institute in South Africa that offers the local, national and international community the opportunity to view its collections including original fossil material usually denied the public. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the significance of fossils. In the middle of the nineteenth century the discoveries of the fossil hunters used to worry poor Ruskin to death, he wrote in a letter in 1851, “my faith, which was never strong, is being beaten to gold leaf…If only those Geologists would let me alone I could do very well, but those dreadful Hammers! I hear the clink of them at the end of every cadence of the Bible verses.”The testimony of fossils over the ages has been remarkably eloquent when we have wanted to listen; and now with mass spectrometers, electron microscopes and secondary X-ray detectors, these long dead organisms can speak to us of the past in ways they never could before. With Richard Corfield, Research Associate in the Department of Earth Sciences at Oxford University; Dianne Edwards, Distinguished Research Professor in Palaeobotany at Cardiff University; Richard Fortey, Senior Research Palaeontologist at the Natural History Museum.

India is famous for many things. But what is little known is that the country used to be one of the biggest homes to dinosaurs. A vast variety of fossils have been found in central India in particular, showing the rich bio-diverse past of the country. But this history is under threat. Remains of dinosaurs and other ancient life are being destroyed due to neglect and oversight. While state institutions are ignoring these conditions, local heroes have stepped in to save India’s dinosaurs from being lost. Watch to find out more. In November 2013, six scientists descended through the twisting passages of Rising Star Cave in South Africa and excavated more than 1,500 fossils from a previously unknown human ancestor. This unprecedented collection of ancient human bones—the largest ever discovered on the continent of Africa—represents at least 15 individuals from a new species of early human named Homo naledi. Associate Professor of Anthropology Jeremy DeSilva has been working on these fossils and presents what and how we know about these early humans. Dartmouth Reunions 2016 Public Program
At the Geological Society Library's event 'The Colours of Geology' (11 August 2017), Dr Maria McNamara (University College Cork) explains how the emerging field of fossil colour has revealed unprecedented insights into the ecology and behaviour of ancient animals, describing how colour is preserved in ancient animals and how it can shed light on what they looked like, how they communicated with each other, and how the functions of colour have evolved through deep time.

Some of the rich history of life on Earth is represented in the fossil record and is put in perspective with the theory of evolution by natural selection. Full scale replicas of dinosaurs and other ancient animals, as well as an actual dinosaur bone you can touch, reveal a glimpse of a time long past. Rich historical stories of discovery and rational thought are told with artifacts such as naval navigation instruments, microscopes, original documents and books, such as a first edition of On the Origin of Species, and news articles of the times, to name just a few. The Darwin & Dinosaur Exhibit at the MOSH truly brings history to life.

Ok! Here we go again. Human Evolution is by far one of the most complex and sophisticated topics to discuss about. It is one that without a doubt will cause a debate in any room or even in the streets because everyone has their own views and hypotheses. So far, we have tried to make it easy for you, but this one has a spin. Inspired by the book Seven Skeletons, in this video we will be naming and describing the seven fossils that shook the evolutionary tree. For this reason, they are known as the celebrity fossils. These fossils may tell us more than where we’ve been and may even tell us who we really are. Halabella does not own the rights to these videos and pictures.
